A Note Before I Go
Bonchurch Village, Isle of Wight, 1198 A.D.
The time had come. Bonchurch manor was his and Robin was gone. It had been a quiet few years at the lodge and things were running well.
He should have been happy there with Lady Eve, her mother and his staff, but as time wore on, something pulled at him. His soulmate called for him from beyond the grave and beyond time.
When the lord slept and went about his daily affairs, the voice whispered in his ear, "Do not forget me, my love." Much couldn't ignore the call anymore.
He knew what had to be done. He had the necklace. It burned fierce with power in his trembling hand as he wrote.
His greatest accomplishment, teaching himself to read and write, was the one that made him the proudest. The long task ahead would require a man of letters and figures. He was now more than ready.
He placed the note by her bedside and gently brushed the back of his hand against her sleep-warm cheek. This gentle woman who was more than a friend, knew him so well and understood the daemons that drove him, would understand why he left and keep things going for his return. She promised with a heavy heart that she would. He made sure she was more than rewarded with a good life and a good home for her kindness. The new Lady Bonchurch would continue the legacy for him when his long journey ended and Carter was home.
"Right, time to go," he whispered as he screwed his cap firmly on his head and stroked the pendant. He had everything he needed to put things as they should be, as he would make them. He stepped into the light without fear and smiled as he disappeared, "I'm coming, my love."
